Episode 23: Interview with Vicki Wilson

Episode 23: Interview with Vicki Wilson

June 12, 2022

Tune in to listen to my conversation with Vicki Wilson, one of New Zealand's top equestrians. I first met Vicki during the inaugural Kaimanawa Stallion Challenge in '14 and we were both presenters/clinicians at the national horse expo for many years.

About Vicki Wilson:
Vicki Wilson was riding not long after she could walk. She started competitive showjumping at 15, and began working full time with horses when she was about 17 years old in the far north of New Zealand. After working her way up from local gymkhanas, Vicki has won more awards at the New Zealand Horse of the Year show than any other rider in history. Winning the World Cup in 2014 took her showjumping career to another level, and she’s now one of New Zealand’s most successful riders.
Outside of the competition arena, Vicki has a special talent for working with ‘difficult’ horses and can start any young horse. She is hugely proud of her work with the local Kaimanawa wild horses, the wild brumbies of Australia and American mustangs. Vicki has started hundreds of young horses and has a very specific philosophy that puts the welfare of the horse first and produces “a happy horse that loves its work”.
Vicki cemented her place as one of the world’s most highly respected horsewomen after winning World Championship of Colt Starting title at the Road to the Horse in both 2017 & 2018.
Vicki Wilson Equine Therapy is aimed at helping as many sore horses as possible. She believes there’s no such thing as a problem or naughty horse and that undesirable behaviour is almost always a symptom of pain or fear.

Episode 20: Interview with Jeremiah Watt - part 2

Episode 20: Interview with Jeremiah Watt - part 2

February 26, 2022

**This episode is broken up into 2 parts...this is part 2**

We got acquainted with Jeremiah when we used to import fine using gear and tack from the US into New Zealand. It was a privilege to be able to provide quality snaffle bits to my students and others. I had the privilege of catching up with Jeremiah late last year and we got so carried away with the conversation we had to edit the interview into 2 parts!

About Jeremiah Watt:
Jeremiah is a renowned cowboy artisan, specializing in engraved bits, spurs and saddles, from Coalinga, CA, USA. A native of Ontario, Canada, Jeremiah Watt developed a love early on for the horses, the gear, and the artistry involved with the saddlemaking trade. After learning saddlemaking in 1976 at a school in Amarillo, Texas, Watt and his wife started their own saddle and tack manufacturing business. He began to teach himself the art of engraving by building silver saddle trim and making his own handmade bits and spurs. Watt has been teaching Western engraving, along with the art of saddle making, for almost two decades.

December 18, 2021

This episode is part 2 of our conversation because it ended up so long! It is always a pleasure to visit with Jeff Sanders, whom I count as one of my mentors. We share a lot of the same interests, particularly that of the history and tradition of the California Vaquero Bridle Horse. Enjoy!

About Jeff Sanders:
Jeff was born in Merced California and raised on the Central Coast, right in the heart of Vaquero country. Jeff is a 6th generation Californian. He is one of very few teaching the California Vaquero style of horsemanship
